Louis Wain  1860-1939

schizophrenic cats

Louis Wain was born in England in 1860 and died in 1939.

It is already born with a malformation of the palate that initially kept him away from the schools.

He attended the West London School of Art, and became a teacher.

After the death of his father he became an illustrator, offering to London's newspapers, satirical cartoons and illustrations which the cats were protagonists, with human behavior.

Wain watched people during their social rituals and represented them as a cats.

His passion for animals was born thanks to his black-and-white cat Peter, who was in company with him and his wife, cancer-sick.

Wain to entertain his sick wife, portrayed Peter in fun and anthropomorphic poses, with glasses and hats, and continued to do that when she died to fill her absence.

Wain had always been considered a fascinating subject, but at the same time strange and bizarre.

After the Great War its success has decreased.

For this reason he became impoverished and began to see in him the first signs of mental disease: he began to become aggressive, abusive and violent.

In 1924 he was certified insane, and locked up in the Springfield asylum.

Despite the schizophrenia he continued to draw, but in the course of his illness his paintings were undergoing transformations: noble cats began to have a psychedelic appearance, real kaleidoscopic cats, with very colorful geometric shapes from which big eyes come out.

This is an indication of his psychosis.

The leaves of his paintings are filled obsessively to the margins, the sign seems to presage the pop art but also the street art.

He was later transferred to a better hospital where he spent the rest of his years drawing in a garden surrounded by plants and his beloved cats.

He closed the bill with his long and troubled life at 79 years.

In addition to Peter, who was always his favorite model, there were other cats that lived with him for many years; like the soraya Minna, the Siamese Bigit and, last, Leo, the red tabby persian.
